200-plus vaccine doses administered this week in the county

As of Wednesday, July 21, Alberta Health reported that 70,879 Strathcona County residents were immunized with at least one dose of vaccine (83.9 per cent of eligible Sherwood Park residents — aged 12 years and older, accounting for 59,681 people and 74.1 per cent of rural residents (11,420 people).

That’s more than 200 first doses were administered this week alone — 174 shots in Sherwood Park and another 48 in the rural portion of the county.

This is on the heels of a promising vaccination week when 400 local residents received their first dose last week.

Here’s a breakdown of the Park’s vaccination demographics:

• 75 and older: 99.3 per cent (5,635 people)

• 60 to 74 years old: 93.6 per cent (12,593)

• 40 to 59: 83.6 per cent (19,095)

• 20 to 39: 73.6 per cent (15,147); this age demographic saw an 71 residents receive their first dose this week

• 12 to 19: 78.9 per cent (6,798).

Vaccination rates based on demographics within the rural area include:

• 75 years and older: 91.3 per cent (773 people)

• 60 to 74: 88.1 per cent (3,136 people)

• 40 to 59: 73.9 per cent (3,793 people; this age bracket marked the highest rate of uptake with additional 16 residents vaccinated this week

• 20 to 39: 62.7 per cent (2,545 people),

• 12 to 19: 62.1 per cent (1,120).

More than 5.1-million total COVID doses have been administered in Alberta. Almost 75 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received at least one dose and 60.7 per cent of the eligible population are fully immunized.

Five active COVID-19 cases reported locally

This week, there were more people recovering from COVID-19 in Strathcona County than contracting it.

As of Thursday, July 22, Alberta Health reported zero active cases of COVID-19 in Sherwood Park, however, there were four cases in the rural portion of Strathcona County.

As of Wednesday, Sherwood Park’s active case rate per 100,000 people was 1.4 — when there was one active case, which was a major improvement over the 6.8 reported last Friday. But of course, that active case rate dropped to zero on Thursday with all cases reported as recovered. The rate of spread continued to decrease in the rural area with an active case rate per 100,000 people from 23.3 last Friday to 19.4 on Monday to 15.5 on Wednesday (that rate remained unchanged on Thursday)

Another eight county residents recovered from the virus since Monday.

A total of 3,594 county residents have recovered from COVID-19 (2,731 in the Park and 863 in the rural area).

Overall, 40 Strathcona County residents have succumbed to the virus — 34 people in the Park and six residents in the rural county.

Since the beginning of pandemic, 3,638 residents in Strathcona County have contracted COVID-19 — 2,765 in Sherwood Park and 873 in the rural area.
