Sherwood Park may be starting to become known for the talented people who live here soon as a former resident is taking centre stage in the international dancing world.
Abbygale Chung, 19, grew up in Sherwood Park and started dancing at Dance Fusion Academy of Dance and now she has just joined the leading dance agency based out of Los Angeles.
“My mom got me involved in it because she was a dancer herself and I started getting really serious at around 10 years old,” explained Chung, 19, who also dances with Kore Dance Studio in Edmonton.
Chung signed with Bloc Talent and said the whole experience has just blown her away.
“Once a year, Bloc holds an annual open call audition, which is open to anyone and everyone, to be represented by them. I went to this audition with absolutely no expectations because there were around 500 people auditioning but I went to the audition and I ended up making it to the end,” she said. “They said they would contact me if they were interested and about one week later I got an email saying Bloc wanted to represent me and give me more dance opportunities.”
Bloc Agency also represents another former Sherwood Park dancer named Taylor Hatala. The agency is known for representing some of the most sought-after artists in the field including two-time Emmy Award winning choreographer Travis Wall, Marty Kudelka, who is the exclusive choreographer for Justin Timberlake, and Jaquel Knight, who is the creative director for Beyonce.
“Walking into the room you have to be confident and believe in yourself but you have to work for it and push for it,” she said, adding dancing is now her full-time job.
Chung already has some major highlights in her dancer career, which included performing with Janet Jackson.
“Dancing with Janet Jackson in Edmonton was a blast. Her choreography held a workshop at Kore Dance Studio and in the end he asked a handful of us to stay behind to talk and he asked us if we wanted to perform with Janet the following day,” she said. “That was definitely one of my top five moments.”
Some other big moments of her blossoming career include national commercials for Honda, Ford, 7-11 and Tutti Frutti.
Chung said she is set to move to Los Angeles now and will be doing a lot more dancing there. The young dancer will be working with chorographers, going on chorography tours, teaching conventions and work in a critical role to show dancers the steps in the routines.
“I’d love to dance in a tour, for performers like Justin Timberlake or Chris Brown. I’d also love to do more music videos, more commercials or anywhere else dancers are needed,” she joked. “It is a really fun job that allows me to do what I love.”
The young dancer encourages dancers in Sherwood Park to follow their passion and to set goals that may sound out of reach but may someday be attainable. Her journey has been a long one that involved lots of hard work and sacrifice, she noted, but she is now doing what she loves full-time and is involved with an agency that represents some of the most prestigious artists in the world.
