Hot tips needed for fire on Galaxy Way

Article content

Fires continue to be a problem this year in Strathcona County and a recent blaze on Galaxy Way has investigators asking for some help from the public.

Strathcona County RCMP said fire crews were called to the flames on Tuesday, June 1 at about 4:45 a.m. on Galaxy Way after receiving a report of a fire at two neighbouring detached garages.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and there were no injuries reported due to the fires.

Investigators immediately started looking for someone responsible and were able to locate a person of interest.

RCMP said the fires are being investigated as arsons and investigators are hoping anyone with information on either fire comes forward.

They are also hoping someone may have dashcam footage or video surveillance from the area around Galaxy Way that morning.

Mayor Rod Frank tweeted Wednesday, June 2 that RCMP has an update on the fires.

“RCMP are working through an investigation involving two potential separate suspects,” Frank tweeted. “We appreciate the public’s patience as every resource is used to thoroughly complete this, resulting in charges – hoping for more news soon.”

There are at least five fires that may be linked to the arsonist, according to RCMP last month.

The first dates back to April 27 when a homeowner found a fire lit on their lower deck, which was able to be extinguished with a nearby hose. The second came May 2 at a duplex on Charlotte Crescent, which was extensively damaged but no injuries were reported. There was also an attempted fire in a resident’s shed on Chaplain Lane on May 6 and an attempted fire on a resident’s deck on May 7.

There was also an attempted arson at a garage on Summerland Drive in mid-May.

“If you see suspicious activity, please report it to RCMP (don’t take action yourself), and practice fire safety such as securing flammable items, locking garages/sheds, and having adequate outdoor lighting,” Frank tweeted.

There is no word on whether the fire on Galaxy Way is connected to the other fires in the investigation.

Despite the mayor mentioning that there are two potential suspects, there is no word yet on any charges or arrests.
