Local MLAs need to do a better job
Coal mining affects Edmontonians too
There may be some feeling that this is a southern Alberta issue. Metropolitan Edmonton citizens and all residents along the North Saskatchewan River should be aware that coal leases have been issued since May 2020 in the headwater regions of our water source.
We need to push the Alberta government to expand its consultation to include environmental and water concerns — without clean, drinkable water, how do we live?

Calls for reforming long-term care ignored
I was appalled that our government would bow to the lobbying of the Alberta Continuing Care Association (ACCA) and introduce Bill 70.
As lawyer Mathew Farrell says, the bill is unconstitutional because it fails to protect vulnerable people and seniors.
Justice is needed for voiceless seniors. For years, many of our voices have been raised about reforms needed in the long-term care system, including by Tammy Leach, the former CEO of the ACCA (opinion column in The Edmonton Journal, Nov. 24, 2015). All these concerns were totally ignored by the long-term care operators and Alberta Health Services.
