It was a big day for the road warriors, in particular for a couple of underdogs who pulled off upset away wins in late Sunday games.
Both the Saints and Ravens were runaway winners in two of the tougher road venues in the NFL.
First to the Saints, who continue to thrive under Teddy Bridgewater’s watch in place of the injured Drew Brees.
Playing at Soldier Field, the Saints were 4.5 point underdogs yet cruised to a 36-25 win over the Bears in a final that wasn’t as close as the final score suggested.
And in Seattle where the Seahawks were once a feared home team, the Ravens romped to a 30-16 win as three-point road underdogs.
Despite those two results, it was as bounceback week overall for favourites, which finished at 7-5 vs. The spread heading into the Sunday night tilt between the Eagles and Cowboys in Dallas.
– Survivor pool participants backing the Bills had a mild scare when the 17 point home favourites were trailing at half time to the lowly and winless Miami Dolphins. The Bills won 31-21 but were never a threat to cover the spread. Two late touchdowns sent the total over the 40.5 over/under mark, however.
– Speaking of double-digit underdogs, the Washington Redskins also managed a cover as the 10-point home underdog to the upstart San Francisco 49ers. Congrats to degenerates who watched this one from start to finish — a 9-0 49ers win. Ugh. The rain in D.C. didn’t help, of course, but still
– Always a weird betting vibe when a poor team overall tends to get a heavy steam of attention leading up to kickoff. Such was the case with the Giants, who closed as 3.5 home favourites to San Francisco and were overwhelmed by the Cardinals defence in a 27-21 loss.
– A quick look ahead to Week 8 shows a four-pack of double-digit favourites starting with the Vikings the 14 point choice over Washington in the Thursday nighter, the Steelers the 16 point home choice over Miami in the Monday nighter, New England opening as the 10-point home pick over Cleveland and the Rams bet up to 12.5 point favourites over Cincinnati.
