The Spruce Grove Saints finished their cohort series against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon with a 5-4 overtime victory on the road.
Saints captain Graham Gamache scored the overtime winner just under a minute into the extra frame after he buried the puck off the rebound from a blocked shot. With the win on Sunday, the Saints ended a six game losing streak and wrapped up the eight game series against the Oil Barons with a 2-6-0 record. The Saints now sit at 5-7-0 on the 2020-21 season.
Fort McMurray jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period Sunday with goals from forwards Hassa Akl and Michael Hodge and defenceman Taige Harding, but Spruce Grove answered back in the second frame and scored three markers of their own thanks to goals from forward Nikola Jovanovic, defenceman Breck McKinley and forward Caiden Gault, tying the game at 3-3 after 40 minutes.
Oil Barons blueliner Rider McCallum gave Fort McMurray the lead once again just before the halfway mark of the third period Sunday, but late in the final frame Saints forward Liam Watkins found the back of the net, tying the game at 4-4 at the end of regulation.
Thomas Couture began in net Sunday for Spruce Grove and played just over 11 minutes. He faced five shots and made three saves before he was replaced by Tyler Palmer, who faced 19 shots and made 17 saves in Sunday’s overtime win.
Game seven on Friday at the Grant Fuhr Arena saw another tough loss for the Spruce Grove Saints as they fell 3-1 at home.
Forwards Clarke Huxley and Tristan Kimmen gave the Oil Barons a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes Friday evening. Fort McMurray’s Jesse Burchart widened the Oil Barons lead to 3-0, just a minute past the halfway mark of the second period.
Spruce Grove forward McKay Hayes broke the shutout in the dying seconds of the game with a power-play goal to make the final score 3-1 for Fort McMurray.
Saints goalie Tyler Palmer faced 23 shots and made 20 saves in Friday’s loss.
The Spruce Grove Saints now take a 12-day break before they face their next opponent, which is yet to be announced.
